Software development showcase

Online@Iowa

Online at Iowa BannerOnline@Iowa is a web-based course offered to newly enrolled students at the University of Iowa.   Electronic tools such as websites, e-mail, and databases have become a large part of academic life.  Many instructors at the University of Iowa expect their students to use electronic resources on campus from the first day of classes.  Knowing how to use the digital tools available at the University will enrich student experience and assist them with their academic career.

The course is designed to help students develop skills for staying in touch, researching, registering for classes, and reviewing grades – among other activities – all from their own computer screens.  At the same time, students will learn about habits and principles that will help protect their computer’s security.

The content of the course consists of activity-based tutorials created with Flash MX 2004. Topics covered in the course include: HawkID, Library Tools, ISIS, Security, ICON, etc.  There are no course meetings, but instructors and teaching assistants are available on-line to provide any assistance needed.

ESPRIT

EspritEsprit, the Engraved Stone Plaque Registry and Inquiry Tool, is the first comprehensive and searchable catalogue of the engraved stone plaques of late prehistoric Portugal and Spain. The current version contains over 1100 plaques found at 210 sites. ESPRIT includes most, if not all, of the published plaques as well as hundreds of unpublished plaques studied by Dr. Katina Lillios in 2003.

On March 24, 2005, ESPRIT was presented at Computer Applications in Archaeology 2005 in Tomar Portugal. Both the slides and paper are available for those interested in the project.

“Etymology is a method of learning words by associating them with their histories. When you learn the story that goes with a word, it is almost impossible to forget the word’s definition (or definitions).”  -- http://www.wordsources.info/

The Classics Drill software instructs students on the etymology of Greek and Latin.  Such pedagogy is extremely important in the Classics, Medicine, Nursing, and English departments.  As the software sequences the student through the problem-solving process of deriving the word’s meaning from its parts, the student internalizes the process and also the meaning of the key word components that make up all words.  The software presents both pre-defined and student-defined collections of words.

This instruction has existed for years as workbook exercises, but by the 1980s it was being delivered electronically.  The current version is web-based, which enables it to be freely usable throughout The University and the world.

Phonetics Animation Project

Phonetics LogoThe Phonetics Animation Project contains animated libraries of Spanish and English phonetic sounds. Available for each consonant and vowel is an animated articulatory diagram, a step-by-step description, and video-audio of the sound spoken in context. It is intended for students of phonetics, linguistics, and foreign language. There is also an interactive diagram of the articulatory anatomy.

This project was a collaborative effort of the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Speech Pathology and Audiology, and Instructional Services at The University of Iowa.
