College of Liberal Arts and Sciences - 3D Printing
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Iowa has developed a 3D Printing Facility available for use by the School of Art and Art History as well as to everyone associated with the University of Iowa. This lab contains two 3D printers, the Zprinter 650 and the Dimension 1200es. Both systems build models from the bottom up, but each system uses a different process and different materials to produce the final product.

Dimension SST 1200es

The Dimension SST1200es uses the fused-deposition modeling (FDM) process to create physical objects with ABS plastic. Support structures are created as necessary and can later be dissolved away with the cleaning station. |

ZPrinter 650

The ZPrinter 650 builds parts from the bottom up using a plastic based powder and binder fluid. The binder can be colored to create an infinite array of color possibilities when printing parts. Models come out of the printer colored.
After printing the parts are carefully removed and placed in the depowdering chamber, where we carefully remove all excess powder
Parts can then be delivered as is to the customer, or we can apply the binding solution, which makes parts much stronger and helps to bring out the colors in the models.

Specification
Build Speed: 2-4 layers per minute
Build Size: 10” x 15” x 8” (254 x 381 x 203 mm)
Layer Thickness: 0.0035” - 0.004” (0.089 - 0.102 mm)
Material Options: High performance composite
Resolution: 600 x 540 dpi
Supported File Format: Accepts solid models in STL, VRML, and 3DS file formats as input. 3DS or VRML needed for color prints.
Data Size: Up to 100MB
Cost: For people associated with the University of Iowa the cost is $4.00 per cu/in without post-processing binder, or $7.00 per cu.in if you want post processing binder. Post processing binder provides stronger, more durable models and really helps bring out the color in your models. We can give you a precise cost BEFORE printing.
